Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if the weather is bad?

So far we have enjoyed great weather for all mine events. However, we will have mine events even if it rains; the rain washes the rocks and makes it easier to spot copper and minerals. We also have an open pavilion where you can seek shelter if there is a downpour.

What is a private ore pile?

Fee digging on a private ore pile offers you your very own pile. This collecting experience is great for couples, families, or groups. It takes place between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. EST.

What is your cancellation policy?

Refunds of 75% will be promptly made if we have notification at least 2 weeks prior to your reservation date. Cancellation notification must be made by mail, fax, or e-mail ONLY.

What if I want to change dates?

If you need to change the date of your event, there will be a $10.00 rebooking fee.

I’m not sure of my dates, can I just come on mine days?

No; advance registrations are required. There is a lot of preparation time for events, and there is a maximum number of people we can accommodate at each event.

What kind of equipment do I need?

· Safety glasses are an absolute must. You will be moving rock and hitting rocks with a rock hammer. There is potential for flying rock and dirt pieces. (We have safety glasses for sale).

· Gloves are recommended to protect your hands from sharp rocks. (We have gloves for sale.)

· Sturdy shoes are necessary to protect your feet. No sandals or open-toed shoes allowed.

· Consider bringing rain gear, hats, and plenty of insect repellent.

· Carpenter hammers are not allowed for breaking rocks. They are not designed for this and could splinter. You will be provided with 2 rock hammers, 1 hoe, and 1 digging tool per pile. If you want additional tools, bring a rock or mason's hammer.

· Please, no shorts; you will want long pants as you will be kneeling on the rock pile. Expect to get dirty too.

Is there somewhere for lunch?

There are picnic tables in the pavilion, available for your use. Feel free to bring a picnic lunch and beverages. There is also a small restaurant in Mass City, and others within 15 miles of the mine.

Do you have restroom facilities?

There are chemical toilets at the Caledonia Mine site.

What time should I arrive?

You should arrive by 8:30 a.m. EST. The final stretch of road to the mine is gravel, so allow extra travel time.

Can I make a lot of money from what I find in my pile?

A day of mine digging is designed to be a hands-on educational adventure. While you will find some copper and other minerals, you should not expect to make a lot of money in one day of digging. Should you want to sell your pieces, some have had good luck selling them on eBay. We would consider purchasing only exceptional pieces.
